'cause when I'm standing here in the dark
Who: Rose Tyler and Metacrisis Ten/John/Handy
What: Rose hunts down her Time Lord
When: Thursday evening
Where: Second Floor and elsewhere
Status: COMPLETE!!
Warnings: None

Wednesday had been a bad day for Rose Tyler. She had not left her room at all. More disturbingly, she hadn't eaten, despite Buffy's protests. Rose never refused a meal- not even in her darkest times. Yes, Wednesday was a bad day, indeed.

Thursday morning was spent sleeping, and through Thursday afternoon, she made faces in the mirror. Happy, sad. Very sad. Thankful. Cross (that one bore a shocking resemblance to her mum). Betrayed, devastated, overjoyed. Any observer would have fancied her mad. Rose, however, found this ritual to be of utmost importance. She had seen The Doctor in her journal. She was going to find him, and when she did, she was going to give him such a look! ...She only had to choose one, and how did a person fit almost two years of conflicting emotions into a glance?

Happy, sad. Very sad.

The Thursday sun began to set. Rose armed herself with a shorter-than-usual skirt, and the eyeliner and lipstick that she'd stopped wearing weeks ago. She opened the door to her room. Her heart quickened. Her stomach grumbled, too, but the girl ignored this sudden hunger. There was an entire house to explore, and nothing could possibly be more satisfying than finding The Doctor. And slapping him. Or kissing him. Or... or something. She hadn't exactly planned it out, despite being unable to think of anything else for the past 48 hours.

Closing the door behind her, Rose looked down the hall. Nobody was there- only green carpet, wooden railings, and the fading daylight. Taking a deep breath, she cupped her hands about her mouth for volume. "DOCTOR!!" the faithful Companion cried. No response. Of course it wouldn't be that easy. She took off running down the corridor, yelling his name.

If she was running to find someone so dear, why did it feel more like being chased?

He'd decided about a week into his new life that the worst part about all this was the sleep. Eight hours minimum?! Who needs Eight hours sleep? Time Lords function on one, if that, and it was perfect. Now, he was mortal and sleeping away about half of his life. It didn't make any sense. And worst of all, if he didn't sleep right, well, he was tired all day and his co-ordination was dreadful.

It was quite the alarm clock to hear his name being yelled out. Well, it was his name. Sort of. He still hadn't exactly worked out what name to pick, John was nice but just a bit too human. Perhaps he needed a less human-y human name and--

Right, back to the yelling. Rolling off his bed, he landed on the floor with a thud and awkwardly managed to stagger to his feet, throwing the door open. Being on time and amazing ready for anything was a lot harder as a human.

Yawning, he stuck his head out the door and frowned at the running blond, not quite making out her face. "Hello? Do you need a Doctor or The Doctor?"

Rose nearly tripped as she came to a halt. There he was, and only a few doors down from her own! She couldn't move. None of the clever faces she'd practiced were coming to her. Instead, the blonde only appeared bewildered. "The Doctor, o' course!"

For all intents and purposes, The Doctor looked the same. His hair was still a coordinated sort of chaos. His voice was the exact one that had been so tragically cut off on Bad Wolf Bay. He appeared tired, maybe, but that didn't faze Rose. They were together again, Time Lord and Companion. Most amazingly, he'd left the house and returned (in a blue suit, no less!). Maybe he could tell everyone how, and get them all home!

Before all that, though...

"Now listen 'ere, ya." She'd practiced this. "Firs', you're gonna gimme a hug- the real good kind, where ya pick me up an' spin me around." As her volume increased, she was able to smile. It did not last. Her tone quickly switched, a more scolding, Jackie-esque face appearing. "An' then, ya'd better run, 'cause I'm gonna strangle the regenerations outta ya for leavin' me again, ya idiot!!"

Rose. Rose was here? Now that was definitely a good thing! So much for worrying about how he was going to phone her and let her know where he'd gone off too... not that he actually knew where he was. Stretching out, he grinned brightly and obeyed the first command with little complaint.

One hug - which included many spins and a truly amused little laugh.

He knew that Sam guy had mentioned Rose was here but frankly, he thought the bloke was a little nuts! Nothing personal but he did rather scare him with the whole not deserving Rose. Still, he had to take back his disbelief, because it seems Rose was here.

"Hello again, I know, I know, I must of disappeared but I'm here and so are you! When did you get here? Can you actually remember because I can't?" he rambled, offering out his hand and wriggling his fingers about. "We'd better explore, get the lay of the land. No time like the present."

Even if he wasn't wearing shoes... or socks, he seemed pretty eager to have a look around and he'd been waiting for someone to drag with him.

The Doctor's smile was contagious. By the time she had her arms around him, Rose was grinning from ear to ear. She laughed with him. The dizzy feeling was everything she'd wanted, both during that first, devastating year without him, and in the months he'd been missing again from the house. Finally, she could have this.

"Six months," she answered, "Can ya believe tha'?" The time didn't matter, though- not if The Doctor had figured out leaving and coming back again. She should have known he'd be the one to do so.

Flooded with nostalgia, Rose reached for his hand. Then, she remembered she was angry. "No," the girl frowned, pulling back. "I mean o' course, I'll show ya everythin', but not before ya explain yourself!"

Really, he should of noticed who he was being mistaken for the moment Rose mentioned regenerations. He wasn't exactly on the ball first thing, that was perhaps another downfall of the constant human-ness.

"6 months? You've been here 6 months? As in... Earth months? How is that even possible, you weren't here a few days ago... where you?" Ok, not he was confused. Frowning, he rubbed the back of his neck and tried to sort it all out in his head. He was sure Rose had been with him and-- Ooooh. Right. Wrong Doctor, wasn't it? He got this from Sam and now Rose.

He was just surprised at how much more it hurt with Rose. She wanted the Doctor and he wasn't it. Not really.

Reaching for her hand, he grabbed it gently and rested it against his chest, letting the one heart best next to it. "I'm not who you think I am. I'm so sorry, but I'm not."

"Yea, six. I'm absolutely sure," she affirmed. Rose had counted every day in her journal, so there was no mistaking it. Though she wanted this moment to be perfect, she was starting to sense something amiss.

Rose let her fingers be lifted by his. The Doctor's skin was warm- warmer than usual. What could he possibly mean, though? There was nobody in the universe like him, and even though time had passed, of course she still wanted him. The word love came to mind.

Her smile did not leave, not even when she could feel his heart against her hand. Rose assumed he was either joking, or acting exceptionally guilty for leaving her. "Tha's silly," she said, thinking herself reassuring. She looked down at her shoes, sections of blonde falling across her face, as she moved her other hand to where a second heart should have been.

Nothing was there. Rose's face grew pale. Her dark eyes darted from one of her own hands to the other, before she finally dove forward to place an ear to his chest. Closing her eyes, all the girl could hear was one heartbeat. Unbelievable. She adjusted herself a few times, wondering if she was somehow listening improperly. No matter which way she leaned, there was only one, unwavering rhythm- the heartbeat of a human.

Rose pulled back, eyes wide. She was still not making the connection, mostly because she didn't want to. "What 'appened to ya??"

Swallowing hard, he let her listen, to see his defection. He wasn't the man she wanted and he could live with that, usually anyway. He knew this Rose must of deviated from the usual time line, she was probably waiting for his Time Lord counterpart to whisk his way in and take her away in the TARDIS.

But he couldn't even her the TARDIS sing any more. Sometimes it broke his heart.

"I've always been like this," he explained with a small smile, shrugging his shoulders before placing his hand on the one heart. "Welllll, sort of. I can remember before. You know, having two, seeing the whole universe and beyond. I even remember you and all we did together. Slitheen, Daleks, Cyberman! Oooh, remember werewolved? Loved the werewolves. But that doesn't mean I did it, though. Not quite the man I once was, you see."

It always hard to explain and here came the tricky part! Always his favourite. Raising his right hand, he wriggled it about at Rose before smiling the best he could. "So, remember Christmas? When my hand got lopped off? I grew a new one. Ever wonder what happened to the other?"

He waved his hand before shoving it back into his pocket. "Well myster solved, cause I'm right here! Hello!"

Rose wanted to be angry. She wanted to lash out, to throw a fit over the fact that this wasn't right. However, the man before her already knew her temper. He started giving examples- proof of their former life together- before she could even scream out a demand for them.

Of course she remembered the werewolf. "We are not amused," she answered, both echoing Queen Victoria and expressing her own feelings. Rose tried to smile back, and did, but only with accompanying tears in her eyes. This Doctor held everything in his head that he should have. What, then, had gone wrong in six months?

"I don't understand," Rose said. She hated feeling daft. The Doctor had been the one to convince her of her own cleverness, so when she didn't meet that expectation, it hurt. "I'd never forget our Christmas. It was the best o' my life, but-" She crossed her arms across her chest, the feeling of abandonment returning. "Nothin' became o' tha'! You-" she was still addressing him as if he were the Time Lord, "You left me on the beach! Nothin' since then, though I'd been searchin'."

Her search for The Doctor had been cut short, of course, by the house they were standing in.

He smiled and nodded his head, definitely not the Rose he knew. That was clear now, he just wished it had been clearer earlier. "I know. But you came back and it was brilliant. You were brilliant. You got away and you came to help, to warn us. If it weren't for you, I wouldn't be here! Oooh, you don't even know how wonderful you were, you missed out on it and I'm sorry."

And that was really all he could offer. Because she deserved to of experience it. Rubbing at his eyes, he wondered if he could escape the blame from the Doctor, he may have done these things in his head but not personally. It was like having all the bad parts of being the Doctor and sorely lacking the good parts.

"But I'm not him. I don't have a TARDIS and one heart. See, one. I'm a metacrisis, half him and half of another companion, her name was Donna. Remember Donna? Probably not. Wrong time line, yeah? You never met me either. Timey-wimey gets very annoying sometimes."

She didn't know how he came to be, she didn't know that the Doctor asked her to watch him and she didn't even know that she'd named him John. Smiling sadly, he couldn't do much else but try and explain. Thats all he could offer.

"I'm sorry. I really am, I wish I was him for so many reasons but I can't really make anything right any more. Not exactly as brilliant but I'm still kind of brilliant."

Rose smiled in spite of herself. The Doctor always knew how to make her feel amazing, like the littlest things she did changed the entire world, and made his long life better.

"I don' remember Donna," she confessed, but something didn't add up. Another Companion, a hand-born Doctor- all of that couldn't have happened in just a few months. The Doctor had been in the house very recently, and hadn't mentioned a thing! Think, Rose, think...

Her eyes widened with revelation. "It ain't the wrong time line at all," Rose proclaimed, snapping her fingers. The Companion had figured it out. "I'm jus' too early!" She wasn't from an alternate universe. She had still been working for Torchwood in Pete's World. She had still lived as the mysterious Vitex heiress in a mansion, pulled from Powell Estate and existing right where The Doctor had left her. She had still been building the Dimension Cannon. If the project had been seen through, she would have found The TARDIS again, just like the man in front of her was saying. Instead, she was trapped here, waiting to go home and finish her story.

Rose Tyler was standing in front of her future.

"Seems like, doesn't it?"

It was odd to confront the past once more but at least he'd found her, it was better than being stuck here alone anyway. He smiled and rubbed the back of his neck, trying to think of something clever to say that would clear this whole mess up. Easier said than done. He was sorely lacking his originals mind set, having a Time Lord and Human side fight in his head made it a lot harder to think than it should.

"Wellll, in the spirit of clearing things up, I'm-- welll I guess I'm John. Doctor John Smith in fact," he grinned childishly and offered out a hand, all professional and everything. When in doubt, introductions are always best. "Like the name?"

Well, she should, she picked it! He wanted something cooler, apparent he just didn't fit all the brilliant and tough guy names he picked. He wasn't sure if he should be offend or amused by that as well.

"John Smith?" Though a few stray tears still threatened her cheeks, Rose gave a small laugh. "Tha's absolutely dull! Ya are human!" She shook his hand with a cordial smile. It was the polite thing to do when meeting a new person- though this definition of new was complicated.

After the handshake came an awkward silence. Rose had no idea what to do. According to John, she was going to see The Doctor again, someday. She was destined to warn them of something, to save them. Talking to John could very well destroy that future timeline. The Doctor himself had taught her those rules.

Still, there was so much to know, to ask! She wondered what was safe. Hmm... One teeny, tiny, personal question couldn't hurt, could it?

"If ya got all the same memories, um..." Rose could feel her cheeks go pink. Her conscience told her not to, but she asked anyway. "'ow d'ya feel abou' me?"

"Thats what I said! I said it was too ordinary now but you said-- Ooor, you know, you didn't say yet. You'll find out, I'm sure," Best not to give every single spoiler, sure he'd probably already ruined the time line but hey, he was trying here. It was hard and awkward but he was trying not to utterly ruin their future together.

The question didn't register at first, he simply smiled and nodded his head happily at nothingness. "You already know, I think you're brilliant. I already said it! You always make me happy and thats just-- oooh, feel, right. Just got that, sorry."

Now that made him stop. Not this again, he never was good at this. Last time it had been a human moment of his, trying to one up the man he couldn't be. Now, having her looking directly at him with no one else to fall back on... he suddenly felt much hotter. Oh, this was not good. He rubbed the back of his neck and offered a very awkward smile.

"You know, I-- ummm, well, you're-- Oooh, you know. You already know, don't you? You should!" Damn humans and their emotions, now he felt all sick. Was it normal to feel sick when discussing this kind of thing? And sweating! Why was he sweating? "How... err, how do you feel about me?"

So, this was how it was going to be? Forever?

On the worst day of Rose's life, The Doctor had disappeared from sight before saying three words- THE three words. She had dreamt of Bad Wolf Bay every night since. Now, a human Doctor stood before her. He had one heart, presumably one lifetime, and still he acted the same. No, she did not "already know." Any man, Time Lord or not, should be able to speak.

"Forget it." It was disappointing and reassuring at the same time. She obviously didn't love John. That would be ridiculous. He wasn't The Doctor, so in fact, love would only make things awkward. Really, she just wanted to see that face say it, not John specifically, and that wasn't fair.

Oh, he'd asked her a question, hadn't he? "I don' know," was Rose's answer. That was it. At the very least, she was going to be honest. This was... too weird.

He knew she was disappointed and he couldn't help but wince. Good job there, he really wasn't as smooth as he liked to think when it came down to this kind of stuff. Instead, he shoved his hands into his pocket and rocked backwards, forming a small 'O' in response to here.

Well, time lines and all, could he really tell for sure if he loved this Rose. Sure there was little difference but memories made the man... or women. Surely if she remember all they'd done then perhaps it would be easier.

Or perhaps he just wanted an excuse and that was the easiest one to pigback onto.

The words were there and he tried to get them out more than once but he found his human side was being drown out by the Time Lord side. When in doubt, fall back on his logical side. It was best not to say anything like that after all, he could be leaving soon and it was wrong to interfere with time!

"I know, I know, I've said it before... but I am sorry. I know you wanted him, I know you were probably expecting him. But if it counts, I bet he'll be back."

"It's okay," she said. She was being too hard on John. He couldn't help the situation. Rose decided not to ask anything more about herself.

"You're makin' me sound like some sorta damsel in distress," the Companion protested. "I 'aven't jus' been sittin', waitin' for 'im this 'ole time, ya know! I've been doin'... other things." John hadn't seen what the house was capable of. Back at home, she had more time to think about the TARDIS and traveling. Here, though, she was trapped somewhere or transformed into something every other day.

Tucking some rebellious hair behind her ears, Rose sighed. "Wha' should I do with ya, then?" She supposed she could watch over John. With Time Lord tendencies, he was bound to be reckless, and would likely endanger himself. Both of them had to stay alive if they were to keep their future intact.

The other option was to ignore him- to pretend she'd heard none of this. That way, when she did make it home, Rose could reunite with John at the proper time. Their relationship could remain unscathed if- no, no. It was impossible to ignore his presence now that he was here.

"Your choice. Ya jus' migh' know me better than I do."

"Oi, I never said you were," John protested right off the bat, putting his hands up in a defensive manner. He'd gotten very used to being defensive these days, especially when Jackie blamed him for everything, even the weather. How was he meant to know that it was likely to rain? He couldn't of saved his washing if he tried!

Looking the hallway up then down, he tilted his head to the side and quirked a smile. "We could explore? Me and you. Haven't had a look around yet. I spoke to some people in the book and -- well, I fell asleep," he admitted with a small shrug. Only he could fall asleep right after being teleported to somewhere out of the blue.

In his defence the beds were lovely, he hadn't felt the needed to leave his room! A few days relaxing? What was wrong with that!

"I haven't actually had a look around but some of the people here have told me about it, time travel on every floor and the like, sounds brilliant, doesn't it?" Smiling bright, he offered his hand again, wriggling his fingers as if asking permission.

"Oooh! I met one of your friends as well... don't think he liked me much though."

It was almost charming, John's innocence. Rose didn't mind exploring with him, but she was a bit afraid. She didn't want to accidentally call him "Doctor" anymore, or say the wrong thing, or even look at the poor bloke improperly- yet there he was, holding out his hand like he didn't mind.

"I 'ave a meetin' t' get to 'round midnight," she commented. "As long as we're back before then..." In the past, The Doctor had repeatedly failed to return her home on time. The quirkiness of the TARDIS once made her disappear for a year, and had gotten Mickey accused of her murder. However, John possessed no time machine. They were stuck here. Rose trusted herself to get back to the second floor within a few hours. They'd have to avoid spoiler-type conversation, and it would be all be very delicate, but... someone had to show him around!

Rose really could justify anything.

She gingerly took John's hand. Again, she noted its warmth, but this time, she knew the reason. Human body heat- she'd need to get used to that.

At the mention of her friends, Rose blinked up at the Metacrisis with interest. "Whod'ya mean?" Her free hand found the back of her neck. "Dean? Couldn' possibly be Sam!" She didn't know Sam to have an unkind bone in his body.

Back by midnight for a meeting? Check! He'd even keep an eye on the time, knowing this stupid body, he'll probably want sleep again by then!

He guessed that it was just force of habit, he'd been in a sort-of-not-a-relationship-but-kinda-like-one with Rose for a while now and they just tended to hold hands, he wasn't sure why but he'd gotten used to it, he didn't even assume she'd find it odd. But then again, he never thought about these things. His mind focused on the bigger things, the little things got glossed right over. It was merely a friendly gestures of sorts. Well, in his own way!

"I think-- umm, yes! No, it might of been Tom... no, thats not right-- Simon... noooo, wrong again. Sam did you say? Sorry, not great with names any more but that one fits, I'm sure. Definitely a Sam," he finally decided, nodding his head to confirm his own thoughts. "He glares a lot, doesn't he? And apparently 'I don't deserve you' or something along those lines. Not sure I get what he means, if I'm honest but I suppose it just means he's fond of you?"

He had no idea what Sam had been getting at, he didn't seem to give it a second thought however. He just kept walking along, assuming still that this Sam bloke was just a little odd. Like most humans really.

Rose kept up with John's brisk pace, remaining directly at his side- that was, until he elaborated on Sam. Her nose scrunched in confusion. "No, 'e don' glare much at all, really," she smiled awkwardly. Were they talking about the same person? Sam Winchester was sweet, intelligent, protective. He'd been nothing less than her best friend here, and for him to say something so nasty to John was just... just...

Oh no.

Rose continued walking, not letting go of John's hand as her mind fluttered away. She thought about her conversations in the basement and library with Sam, how they'd confided in each other. She remembered how he'd hovered over her in the medical room, back when they'd been cornered by demons in a nightmare. Most recently, she'd told Sam about Eric, and his reaction had been startling. Yes, Rose felt something for Sam. She'd stopped lying to herself about it weeks ago. She'd even told Buffy, so it wasn't exactly a secret or anything. Still, her past had kept her from opening up, and she'd accepted that.

...Her past, and now, her future. As John lead her toward the stairs, Rose took a long glance down the hallway. She considered letting go of her partner to knock on the Winchesters' door. The Meta-Doctor was blissfully distracted, though, and she was pulled forward before deciding. Oh well. She'd see Sam at midnight, anyway.

"Really? Must be me then, not the first time someones taken an instant disliking. You win some, you lose some, yeah?"

He wasn't really paying attention to their Sam discussion any more anyway, which was obvious by his mumbled response, he was much more taken in by the wonders of this place. Sure on the outside it was just a house but it was still a pretty nice one. And from what he heard, different time periods were on different levels, like that time travelling hotel he once stayed at in the Riskos Galaxy. Wonderful place but he never could keep track of where and when his room was meant to be.

"So six months here and no way out? I'm guessing the front door doesn't work then?" Well, that one was obvious or he doubted they'd be locked in for that long. He supposed he still assumed humans were a little bit slow, even if he was half of one himself. "Its odd though isn't, I mean what keeps it stabilised? This many time periods in one go, surely it goes against universal laws."

Course he could ramble on all day about his mistrust of this place but part of him wondered if he was just rehashing old thoughts out to Rose that someone before him may have known. Like the Doctor that had been here. He'd found a way out apparently and now he was determined to do the same!

Because he was just as good.... Right?

"Yea, mus' be," she said, and that was that. She certainly didn't want to talk about other men anymore, not with John. Thankfully, the Human Doctor seemed to bore easily. He was already a subject ahead- maybe two or three.

"O' course we tried the door," Rose replied, a little defensive. "An' jus' abou' every other possible thing." She could recall zip lines, tunnels in the ground, fire- Pavel apparently knew something of teleportation devices, but they didn't exactly have that kind of technology available. "If you're gonna be human, Doctor, ya need t' be a li'l more careful abou' considerin' us stupid apes." Though she was offended, a bit of a smirk crossed her face. "You're stuck monkeyin' around with our lot, now."

She laughed at her own jokes every single time.

"Ah yes, life among the gorillas," he joked before he very slowly realised how offensive that could be. He really needed to stop doing this, usually Rose was there to hit him when he said the wrong thing and now she was here but too far behind in the time line! Oooh well, he was sure she'd soon learn to love hitting him one when he was trampling all over humans and their customs by accident. "Right, sorry, forget that!"

He actually loved living with humans for the most part, it was bracing really. He was always amazed how such simple things, like who some celebrity was dating, could brighten up their day.

Frankly, he was less interested, perhaps thats why he got bored fast. "I wouldn't say I'm stuck-- Well, actually, rather am, aren't I? But its not exactly like I hate it."

She raised an eyebrow as John tried to backpedal. It was difficult to tell what parts of his floundering were a Time Lord's, and which were a human's. He was so much like The Doctor at points. Then, he'd just turn into something else- something like a silly child.

Rose let out a laugh. "O' course ya don' 'ate it," she smirked. "Ya got brilliant company like Rose Tyler!"

In her own way, she was saying she'd be there for him. In what capacity, she could not yet tell. The girl just couldn't say no to that face. She loved that face. His stumbling humanity needed a guide, and her familiar presence was surely the best option. When it came to the deeper, future-y stuff, well... that would work itself out, wouldn't it? They could be careful.

"Lemme show ya where the kitchen is," Rose said, gently pulling John toward the stairs. "My mate Buffy 'as the key. Did'ja get a key t' anythin'?"

"Oh yes, brilliant company, couldn't get better," he agreed with a small smile, hurrying along after Rose so he could get a good look. His hand slipped free, digging into his pockets so he could locate the keys he'd grabbed, he wasn't quite sure why he had it but he supposed it was best to keep a hold of it. "Medical ward apparently, not sure if they actually thought I was a Doctor or not."

Either way, he wasn't about to pass up a chance to see it. Or the kitchen. What century would the kitchen be in, part of him was curious how food even appeared here, there must be a delivery or something like that for any of this to be possible!

"Jackie said I should train as a Doctor now-- Well, more like 'get off your lazy arse and get a job, didn't you say you were a Doctor?!'-- but same things," he dismissed, idly toying with the key in his hands. He wasn't going to get a job or a stupid bus pass! Frankly, this weird house detour was perfect, it saved him from having to put up with the mundane bored that was normal human activities.

No matter where he was stuck, he always seemed to find something out of the ordinary to do.

"Oh," Rose blinked, amused. "Sam 'as the same key. You two'll be like brothers in a matter o' days." Her tongue poked through her teeth as the girl grinned. She was kidding, of course- though the boys bonding would certainly make things easier.

The pair walked down the stairs, Rose leading the way. She listened attentively as John ranted. Frankly, she agreed with her mum- if The Doctor was going to be human, living in their house, he needed to carry some of his own weight. Funny how making something of her own life changed Rose's perspective on employment. She would not, however, simply bark like Jackie. Instead, the Companion posed suggestions.

"I'm sure there's somethin' ya could grow t' like," she assured. "Animal Doctor, Pilot... ooh, ya could work in a museum! Ya love museums, don'tcha?"

Pulling a face of disgust at the very idea of getting a job, it was clear that he wouldn't go get one without a fight. He'd managed a month without even looking, he just hid in the Tylers basement, experimenting with different bits and bobs, popping into Torchwood on occasion to lecture them on how wrong they were. Even if they were right!

"Course I love museums, I love visiting them but I don't love working in them. It'd be boring and then I'd never be able to set foot in one without associating it with work," besides, he was 1000 years old and a universal genius, was he really going to waste his time dusting bones?

Getting a job was like giving in and admitting he was stuck on Earth, half human and doomed to a life of domesticity and servitude to the government. "I'll find a way to make money, I'm good at making money and if all else fails, I always have my sonic."

Rose's face showed obvious distaste. She remembered their "mortgage" talk, back when there was only one Doctor and he was almost stranded with her for life. She hadn't realized how serious he'd been about this apparent horror. Humanity wasn't that bad.

If only John knew how lucky he'd been! Rose had lived in this house for six months, while the Metacrisis got to see her mum and dad and Tony every day. "Tell me abou' my brother, Doctor," she asked, changing the subject. She didn't want him throwing a bloody fit over work anymore. Moreso, Rose Tyler was homesick.

Her train of thought derailed at the mention of a certain intergalactic lock-opener. The blonde gasped. "You 'ave a Sonic Screwdriver??" Rose's mouth gaped open. How had this not been the first thing to come up? "Wha'- 'ow is tha' even possible?!" And why weren't they using it at the front gate right now?

"Your brother? Annoying, he keeps throwing his food at me and calling me Johno for some reason," Miscommunication were the death of him, he said his name wrong one time and the little brat never let it go, it was Rose fault for distracting him in the first place with cookies. Trying to speak around food was difficult whether your human or Time Lord. "We watch cartoons together every weekend morning 7 til 10, cereal is always at 8:26, when the break starts."

He was oddly rigid with his morning schedule these days but he needed a way to ground himself, mornings proved to be his only stable and consistent time of day and frankly, he was starting to love it. Plus human TV was always brilliant on the most part.

Pulling out his relatively busted up sonic, he pressed the buttons, its spluttered, made a crackling nose and sparked in his hand. Yelping, he dropped it and pulled a face at his burnt hand. "It broke when I left it in the washing machine by accident, haven't fixed it yet."

"Johno, eh?" Her mouth twisted oddly. Rose wasn't sure if she should laugh or cry. It sounded like Tony was growing up just fine, and she wasn't there! Well, she was. Sort of. The timeline was somehow holding, even with her imprisonment in this building.

John's story had a second significance. If Rose estimated Tony's age, she could figure out when she'd be seeing The Doctor again! Quickly, the blonde started counting... and just as quickly, she stopped. That sort of math was probably against the rules of timeline preservation. Sigh.

Rose looked in wonder at the Sonic Screwdriver. "Tha' belongs to The Doctor, though," she said, as if John didn't know. "'ow is it with you?" The answer barely mattered. A renewed energy was already rising in the Companion's chest. "We 'ave'ta fix it- now! Tonight!"

She'd seen the Sonic open all sorts of locks. If it could open the locks that held them all here, John would be a hero.

...With that sort of victory under his belt, he'd never get a job.

"Johnny. Prefer John personally. Actually! I prefer the Doctor but John'll do," After all, he knew as well as any that he couldn't exactly own the title, he had to let go and accept he'd changed. The Doctor wasn't his name but he was getting used to it. It was all down to getting used to things.

Giving Rose a small look, he rolled his eyes and snatched the screwdriver back almost defensively, he knew it wasn't originally his but he was the Doctor, sort of. Every Doctor needed a screwdriver. "I made it, exact replica, took some assistance from Torchwood but I've done it before and I'll do it again. Easy. Welll... not easy, not really. It just took longer than expected and I ran out of parts, have to improvised a bit. Torchwood never has what I wanted."

Well, it wasn't there fault, he was expecting more technology but he supposed them having less was more a blessing than anything. Humans with alien tech was always a bad idea.

"Fix it? Do we have tools here?"

If they did, he could fix it pretty easily. Grinning at Rose, he twirled the screwdriver around in his hand before giving it a closer look. Nothing a little tinkering wouldn't solve!

"Johnny is a bit more excitin' than John," she mused, "a very teensy bit."

She was surprised to hear about The Doctor working with Torchwood. He didn't have much reason to trust or even like the organization. Rose herself had been working with the Torchwood London of Pete's World. They had the resources for the Dimension Cannon, and heaven help her if an alien expert was going to be a shop girl again!

"Do I still-" For a second, Rose considered asking John if she'd stayed with Torchwood after finding the TARDIS. "...Nevermind." Again, she refrained.

"We don' 'ave much," Rose admitted, particularly when it came to the alien goods he'd be looking for. "We're brilliant, though! I'm sure there's somethin'." The girl could tell she'd sparked some motivation in John. She wondered if getting him moving wasn't her job in the future, too.

They reached the kitchen. It was open, but the pantry was locked, as usual.

"I like John. John is good, don't you like it? Simple, human, doesn't draw attention, perfect to blend in," Which is still what he wished to do, he wasn't about to prowl around the neighbourhood showing off, he was happy enough to try and play it cool, not draw attention to himself.

Even if he often did unintentionally. But scaling your neighbours roof to amp their TV signal without permission probably wasn't the stealthy way he could of gone about introducing himself.

"Do you what? You can ask, the world won't implode on itself," he promised as they stepped into the kitchen. Raising an eyebrow, he looked around before frowning. How exactly did this even work.

"Where does the food come from?"

Rose thought about the name John- really thought about it, not just as a label, but for its implications. "I suppose I see the point," she nodded. "Nobody ever expects a name like John Smith t' be the one doin' the mischief." No, John Smith was the bus driver, or the unassuming bloke behind the counter at the bank. Surely, this very idea had already saved him more than once.

"I-" Once given permission, Rose couldn't help herself. Her mouth became uncorked like a bottle. "Do I still work for Torchwood? Does my dad do any inventin'? Do the papers try t' photograph ya like they did with me? Does Tony say any words? 'ow abou' the zeppelins-"

She could almost hear the sound of their future shattering. And she didn't much care.

He had to pause as he slowly processed all the questions and broke them down so he could work out what part to answer first. So what if their time line fell apart? It probably already had. For all he knew, they were meant to meet to change the time line and if they didn't then that could end badly, badly like the end of the world! Then again, he could just be over-reacting and trying to justice to everything!

"You work for Torchwood, though I try to stop you, still don't trust them, I just like to steal their parts. Your father does inventing but I'm banned from watching him after I tinkered with his last one. Never been photographed, Tony has the average vocabulary of someone who recently turned 3 and I'm pretty sure the zepplins are as they've always been."

Taking a breath as he finished his explanation, he smiled before venturing into the kitchen to have a prod around.

If Rose had any more questions, he'd try and answer then.

Blimey. Rose mouthed the word "three" as John wandered further into the room. Lips parted, she filed all the answers away in her brain the best she could. Six months for her, a few years for him- nothing about time really shocked her anymore... unnerved, maybe, but never shocked.

Her wits returned, and Rose trotted to catch up with the Metacrisis. "The food," she piped in, having at first ignored his query. "We don' know where it comes from. It jus' sorta is. People 'ave been down 'ere all hours o' the nigh', and we never see nothin'."

Her eyes scanned the kitchen around them. The kettle was still in the sink from a few nights prior. She tried to think about what she'd be wondering, were she seeing the room for the first time. "S'pose we could jus' sit an' wait 'ere, one day, watchin' for a delivery."

John would probably find that boring.

"So food has been randomly appearing in the kitchen and no one ever thought of staking it out and keeping an eye on delivery? Or maybe trying to work out where it comes from or if its dangerous?" Perhaps he was overly cautious but he had his doubts, it was like his clothes following him here, it just made very little sense.

It was as if someone wanted to keep them here.

Sure he wanted to find out how it worked but not himself, he pulled a face at the very thought of it. Until he realised slowly that it could actually work. He could sit up, watch over the kitchen and work on the sonic at the same time! Grinning at his new found plan, he clapped his hands together and nodded.

"I'll watch it, tonight even. You have to go at midnight, I'll stay here, work on my sonic and keep an eye out. I'll let you know if I find anything, hows that?"

EDIT to ask: Should we wrap up here?
Well, when he put it that way, he made the entire house sound braindead. They didn't exactly have time for pantry stakeouts, what with the monsters and such. "Guess not."

Rose decided not to tell John about the dangers- not yet. If he could have a few days of peace, that would be worth the surprise later.

His sit-in idea wasn't half bad, albeit a spot lonely. Rose smiled at the Human Doctor's generosity. "Couldn't 'urt," she said with a nod. "You've slept all day, so ya prolly ain't tired." With that, the Companion moved to take a seat on the floor. "I'll stay with ya as long as I can. Now let's see tha' Sonic, eh?"

Sure sure <3
Producing his sonic, he leaned over it and started to tug it apart, looking more in depth as he tinker with the inards.

"See, it'll be easy to fix it I can get the right kind of part that'll slow down the charge and cool it, preventing the energy from overheating and burning my hand but at the same time I can't cap the sonics power, especially here, so I'll have to up the power."

And he rambled on like that for as long as he kept watch, fiddling with bits and pieces until Rose left.

Aww <3 COMPLETE.
...And if Rose Tyler, listening intently, fell asleep on the kitchen floor while John talked, she'd have to be forgiven. She didn't dream of Bad Wolf Bay for the first time in months because he was there. It was the best nap she could recall in recent history, despite the distinct lack of bed.

...and if Rose Tyler was late to the meeting, well, perhaps someone could forgive her for that, too. Ironically, time travelers never seemed to get anywhere on time.
